In this presentation eBay and DELL will describe how they address several key business issues by jointly working with OSIsoft, leveraging the OSIsoft Enterprise Agreement, and combining OSIsoft technology with partners as catalysts for innovation. The presenters will describe how they address the needs of the hyper-scale, hyper-performance, and super-dense IT market, and the crucial role that OSIsoft plays in their businesses. Specifically they will explain what eBay looked for and what needed to be done to meet their business needs. These included:
- Accommodating the exponential growth of data center utilization
- Meeting extreme efficiencies requirements, reducing energy, and increasing sustainability throughout their DC operations
- Meeting pressing financial objectives
eBay and DELL will also define the solution that was developed. That solution is referred to as the S3Program, which stands for Standardize, Shorten, and Simplify. The presenters will, moreover, provide the results of the S3 project, and how it met eBay's specific business needs. Specifically, the project:
- Standardized deployment based on a template-based Asset Framework model for an MDC, standardized MOP, and reduced error and rework
- Shortened the integration effort from 2-3 weeks to 2-3 hours, allowing faster increases in capacity and reduced integration costs
- Simplified all phases of implementation and operation, improved quality control, and allowed test results to become part of the living history of the MDC
Altogether, the S3 program enabled a substantial increase in YOY growth in DC capacity, 40% more than previously expected. Meeting and surpassing these capacity needs allowed eBay to meet its CEO growth goals of total commerce. Essential to all of this was the OSIsoft Enterprise Agreement, which aided them in enabling technology partnerships, which were catalysts for innovations, allowing solutions to be implemented that otherwise could not have been."

Dwayne Kalma
In his current role Mr. Kalma is responsible for designing the software infrastructure that supports eBay's data centers Controls and Monitoring systems used to control mechanical equipment, monitor electrical infrastructure, and collect data used for analytics supporting current and future business development. This includes developing and testing innovative software applications able to monitor server enclosures, power strips, cooling apparatus, and granular end point devices used to maintain data center infrastructures. His work provides solutions that increase the deployment speed of reliable, repeatable and cost effective infrastructure.
Prior to joining eBay, Dwayne had 15 years of experience installing, managing, and operating electrical infrastructures supporting data center floor space design along with annual maintenance performed to maintain uptime availability for a large portion of the financial industry (Discover Card, American Express, Goldman Sachs, and First American Bank). He implemented data center standard practices and updated multiple existing whitespace infrastructures to maintain redundant power feeds to the server.

Tyler Duncan
Mr. Duncan is a Principal Thermal and Controls engineer for Dell Data Center Solutions (DCS), focusing on modular infrastructure solution development. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri and has over 10 years of experience in IT thermal design, data center thermal simulation and cooling, controls/monitoring design, and modular data center design/manufacturing. He has architected, engineered and productized numerous controls and monitoring systems for Dell's modular data centers. As an engineer he believes strongly in hands-on evaluation and optimization, and spending time at the customer site understanding how the solutions are being used. His thermal, controls and monitoring solutions have been a critical part of over 85MW of modular data center solutions in production, most utilizing 100% outside air cooling while supporting extreme densities and challenging climates. Mr. Duncan has 9 US patents.
