Caterpillar is a 90-year-old company that manufactures heavy-duty iron equipment that ranges from engines to diggers to bulldozers. With a slogan of “Built for It,” Caterpillar prides itself on delivering high-quality products so its clients can see return on investment. However, in a digital age, return on investment is no longer limited to equipment functionality, especially for marine vessels. It’s about using sensor data from those assets to improve vessel performance and maintenance strategies. With the help of the OSIsoft PI System, Caterpillar created Cat Connect to apply analytics to raw vessel data and turn it into actionable information.

CEMEX, famous for producing cement, has also been in the power industry since 1998. In 2014, the subsidiary CEMEX Energía was created with the dual purpose of reducing electricity costs and CO2 emissions for cement production through renewable energy and allowing CEMEX to take advantage of opportunities in the worldwide energy market. At the 2017 OSIsoft Users Conference, Roberto Carlos Medrano discussed how CEMEX Energía is leveraging the PI System and OSIsoft Connected Services to support cement production; improve wind farm operations; increase visibility into wind farm power production; and track performance for warranty and service contracts.

Clearwater Paper is the largest provider of private label tissue to retail grocery chains in the United States and a manufacturer of bleached paperboard. With seven manufacturing sites, over 10 paper machines, over 50 tissue converting lines, and pulp mills, recovery, and power boilers, real-time operational intelligence is critical to the company’s success. A PI System user for over 20 years, Clearwater Paper relies heavily on system insights, but it was a challenge to manually create targets and KPIs for every PI Tag. With the help of Envoy Development, they were able to put the right metrics in place to understand deviations and take appropriate action to keep production on track.

Founded in 1997, JiangSu Nuclear Corporation, Ltd ("Jiangsu Nuclear") is responsible for the construction, commercial operation, and management of the Tianwan nuclear power station. Their portfolio of successes includes the first vehicle to cross the 23-mile wide English Channel, the first solar-powered vehicle, and, since 1985, UAVs (also known as drones). The company originally developed drones for the military and Department of Defense, but the value of the visual data collected by drones has created demand in the commercial sector. Now, with help of the OSIsoft PI System, AeroVironment is finding new applications for drone data.
